Dr. Nicholas Jones, Optometrist
Where did you go to optometry school?
I graduated from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA in 2013. I grew up in New Hampshire, 45 minutes north of Boston. Go Pats!
What is your clinical experience?
I started off as an active duty optometrist in the US Air Force during which I was based at a large hospital in Northern California. Once I left active duty, my family and I moved to Hawaii where I continue to serve in the US Air Force Reserves. In Hawaii, prior to opening this clinic, I practiced at the refractive surgery center at Tripler Army Medical Center and at Kaiser Permanente.
What are your clinical interests?
What I enjoy most about optometry is that I have the opportunity to serve patients of all ages and backgrounds. I am particularly interested in pediatric optometry, refractive surgery, myopia control, and specialty contact lenses.
What brought you to Hawaii?
My wife and I moved here in 2016 to be close to her family - lucky for me. We now have a daughter (Sophia) and a son (Grant). I can’t believe they get to grow up in such an amazing place.
What’s your favorite place you’ve travelled?
Thailand. Every meal was memorable and the people are wonderful.
What’s your favorite movie?
A tie between Groundhog Day and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Woodworking and building things. My latest creation is a giant playground for my kids at our home.
Do you have any pets?
I have a black cockapoo named Gwen. She is very lazy.
What’s your favorite afternoon snack?
Anything dark chocolate!

When did you get your first pair of glasses?
16 years old. I picked out a tiny oval shaped tortoise frame.
What’s your favorite place you’ve travelled?
Naples, Italy because of the endless espresso, Prosecco, pizza, and gelato!
What’s your favorite movie?
Eat Pray Love
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I’m a dance artist and especially love taking ballet classes. I love to sew, make costumes, and try out funky new hairstyles.
Do you have any pets?
Two kitty sisters, Mika and Lilo, who are super playful and love to watch me dance.
What’s your favorite afternoon snack?
Acai bowl. The best way to recharge in the afternoon. Yum!
What is your favorite eyewear brand that we carry?
Garrett Leight, every pair feels so comfortable and light.
What is your sunglass type?
Big, bug-eyed with some element of tortoise.
What do you like most about working at Kaka'ako Eye Care?
My favorite part of this job is seeing patients return to the office. Whether it’s for their annual eye exam, to pick out a second pair of glasses or bringing their family members to see us for a service!

When did you get your first pair of glasses?
In middle school.
What’s your favorite place you’ve travelled?
Now that's a hard question to answer. I can narrow it down to two places. I loved being in the Marshall Islands, in Majuro. I also love Europe and I loved visiting an area in the Czech Republic called Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary), known for their thermal spas.
What’s your favorite movie?
Recently, The Sleepover, on Netflix has been cracking me up.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I do volunteer work where I get to teach my favorite things from the bible. I also enjoy being a part of a team that helps maintain and construct places of worship for others here in Hawaii. And of course going to the dog park with my two pups.
Do you have any pets?
Yes indeed! I have two dogs, Penny and Hershey. Also known as: the monsters. But my sweet monsters.
What’s your favorite afternoon snack?
Does coffee count as a snack? If not then a cream cheese filled pastry alongside a hot latte with an extra shot.

What do you like most about working at Kaka'ako Eye Care?
Lots of things. On the top of my list however, I love the people I work with, it's wonderful to come to work and have a warm and friendly environment.

Since I was 17 years old.

When did you get your first pair of glasses?
I was nine years old when I first started wearing glasses. Ever since then, I've always gotten excited to pick out a new pair of glasses.
What’s your favorite place you’ve travelled?
My favorite place that I've ever travelled to is Taiwan. I enjoyed the food, beautiful scenery, and the people were kind.
What’s your favorite movie?
Ever since I was a kid, my favorite movie was The Parent Trap. I love feel-good movies that are meaningful and touching
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love taking time to enjoy nature, especially watching the sunset. I also love taking pictures to capture fun memories.
Do you have any pets?
Not currently, but I am an animal lover! I used to have a dog named Muffin and she will always have a special place in my heart.
What’s your favorite afternoon snack?
I love boba milk tea! My favorite is jasmine milk tea.

What do you like most about working at Kaka'ako Eye Care?
I enjoy the feeling that comes from helping others. We have a really great team here at Kaka'ako Eye Care, and I'm grateful to work in such a cool environment.
